Sadly, I never took notes or watched him as closely as I should have, but I think he would be proud of my efforts.Ĭlassic Ham & Bean Soup is an ultimate comfort food for me. He never followed a recipe – he followed his senses and always got it just right. I see him tasting it, choosing the perfect seasonings and sprinkling to his heart’s content. Every time I make bean soup, I picture Dad standing in the kitchen, lifting the ham bone out of the huge soup pot and picking the juicy meat off the bone. My dad made the best Navy Beans & Ham (dad used navy beans). The main reason Classic Ham & Bean Soup affects me so strongly is it reminds me of my dad. Cook on high 5 hours (or low for 7-8) or until beans are tender. It’s a hearty and delicious soup the whole family will enjoy. I love it and especially love it served over a thick slice of skillet cornbread. Rinse beans and add to the slow cooker with onions, ham, broth and seasonings (per the recipe below). This navy bean soup is made with smoked ham shanks, vegetables and spices. Step 3: Add the chicken broth and you’re ready to cook. Sauté until the onions become fragrant and translucent, about 5 minutes. Once butter is melted, increase heat to medium and add onions. In a small skillet heat the olive oil over high heat and add the onions.Other spices that work well with garlic powder include thyme, oregano, parsley, cumin, and paprika or chili powder for an added kick. Turn heat up to high to bring broth to a. It is best used in moderation, about 1 teaspoon for every 4 cups of liquid in the soup. Slowly add glugs of chicken stock while stirring until a smooth sauce has been formed then pour in remaining stock. Garlic This gives the soup a rich, nutty flavor that contributes to its popularity.
